Who is NorCal?

Formerly Marin Endocrine Care and Research, newly named NorCal Medical Research is now in its 36th year as a private, independent clinical research company in Northern California. As Medical Director, I am proud of our history of participation in over 150 cutting-edge research trials in pharmaceutical and device clinical research. Our site has been chosen as a partner by industry leaders because of our expertise in meticulously overseeing diverse clinical research protocols. Our medical services are recognized by our colleagues and patients to provide unique opportunities for medical care.

NorCal has established strong ties with leading pharmaceutical companies and review boards, and we have seen steady growth and expansion of our experience, staff, and space. Initially focused on diabetes, obesity, weight loss trials, neuropathy, hyperlipidemia and hypertension, we have also participated in numerous studies in thyroid, osteoporosis, women’s health and others. We care for patients in the greater North Bay of San Francisco and our new name, NorCal, references this expansion and anticipated further growth.

This year, we welcomed two new physicians to our roster of investigators, Dr Elizabeth Lowe and Dr. Irene Teper. Former partner, Dr Richard I Bernstein, has become emeritus in his retirement since co-founding the practice with me. The combined research training and impressive clinical skills of our physicians complement our experienced clinical management staff, many of whom have been on our team for over fifteen years. This cohesive group, in addition to newer staff and an expanding group of referring physicians from diverse specialties and primary care, will move the capabilities of NorCal Medical Research forward towards our expanded goals.

In our new configuration, we plan to continue to participate in weight management and diabetes related clinical trials, cardiometabolic, thyroid, and bone health studies, neuropathic pain management, women’s and men’s hormonal health, and others. Our facilities are fully equipped with the most recent Electronic Data Capture systems and equipment to conduct these clinical trials. NorCal has a designated lab to process clinical trial lab samples and contains both a standard and refrigerated centrifuge, as well as a refrigerator and -30 freezer.

Our mission is twofold: to partner with leading pharmaceutical and device industries to add to the fundamental understanding of disease treatment through state-of-the-art clinical research, and to maximize unique clinical opportunities for patient management in the community. Patient-centric safety, efficacy, and utility are the standards by which we choose clinical protocols that enable us to individualize and expand care options for our patients. These same guidelines ensure optimal outcomes for our industry partners in research and development.
